Proud Water Carrier*

Item Description

Impressively cast and delightfully painted terracotta statue of a barefoot, very proud looking north African girl carrying an urn.  She has a strong, expressive and quite determined look about her and is wearing a head-dress and fringed robes that are beautifully detailed.

We’ve been reliably informed that this piece probably originates from Germany or Austria and dates from around 1880-90.  Very much in the style of Johann Maresch but is unsigned, showing just a few numerical marks on the underside.

There are two or three very minor chips to the fringe of her skirt but these are mentioned purely for accuracy and in no way detract from display.  A touch under 69 cm in height.
