Bronze bust by Ernest Sperlaeten*
A good bronze bust titled “Bohème” by the Belgian sculptor Ernest Sperlaeten. Little seems to be known about this artist, other than that he was productive during the latter part of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
This is a pleasing and well balanced composition with the bare-shouldered young girl looking partially to her right. She has an attractive, confident face and is wearing a headscarf which is tied at the back. She also wears a necklace with two medallions suspended at the front.
Signed by the artist and mounted on a reddish brown marble base, this bust dates from around 1900.
There are one or two minor age-related marks to the original patina and small chips to the corners of the marble but otherwise it is in excellent condition. The overall height is 36.5 cm.
