Portrait of a Lady by M.B. Fowler*
Oil on canvas portrait of a young lady painted and signed by the artist M.B. Fowler and dated 1914.
With her swept back hair and gentle smile, the subject is looking confidently towards the viewer, her attractive, open face and the sparkle in her green eyes so well captured by the artist in what is a very pleasing image.
She’s wearing a wide collared blouse secured at the top with a little gold and turquoise brooch in a style that was so very typical of the times, but unfortunately her identity is a mystery. However the name Maunsell can faintly be seen written in faded pencil on the back of the frame which may or may not have any relevance.
It is also noted on the back that the artist was a gallery portrait painter between the years 1924 and 1939, although this example of his work, as can be seen by the date, is somewhat earlier.
In its original frame with the old framer’s label still attached.
The picture has been glazed, unusually for an oil, and measures 53 X 45 cm overall with the image approximately 35 X 29 cm.
