Oil on Board of a Tyrolean Peasant*

Item Description

Atmospheric old oil on board by Ignatz Felix Guggenberger, a Munich born artist who was active from around 1870.

Titled ‘Peasant of Meran – Tyrol’ the subject, clad in his lederhosen, is seated enjoying a glass of red wine. The nearly full carafe on the table beside him holds the promise of a few more glasses to come.

Beautifully painted in subtle colours and still in its original old frame which has opened up slightly on a couple of the mitres.

Label affixed verso with the picture title and artists name.

Approximately 37 X 32 cm overall with the image measuring 24 X 19 cm.

Interestingly, Guggenberger was married to the well known English poet and social activist Louisa (L.S.) Bevington between the years 1883 and 1890. During this time they lived at Meran where this picture was almost certainly painted.
