Goldscheider “Spirit and Power”*

Item Description

Fabulous and rare Goldscheider statue of a Roman gladiator proudly posing in front of an alert looking panther.  He is naked apart from his helmet and a small fringed frontispiece just about covering his decency.

Titled on the front of the base “Animus et Vis” which is Latin for Spirit and Power.

The artist was Adolphe-Jean Lavergne and his signature can be seen by the panther’s leading foot.  Made around 1905-08, model number 3526 and with an overall height to the top of his trident of 107 cm.

Lovely condition with, we think, part of the panther’s tail having been carefully restored at some stage.

Lit:  Dechant/Goldscheider p. 372  –  also Pinhas p. 41
