Skønvirke Brooch by Evald Nielsen*
Splendid and large Danish Skønvirke silver brooch designed by Evald Nielsen dating from circa 1910.
Almost circular in outline with a graduated beaded silver border and a pair of bell-shaped flowers, each accented with a moonstone cabochon. Another moonstone is set at the top.
In the centre a large Swiss lapis oval cabochon is partially covered by a pair of silver leaves which descend from the top of the mount.
Unusually, rather than from the bottom, the Swiss lapis set drop is suspended from the most forward facing part of the brooch, between the two leaves, thus giving a strong three-dimensional look.
Marked SJ on the back – almost certainly the mark of the original retailer, and also showing 830 silver mark.
Approximately 8 cm long and a fraction over 5.5 cm wide.
Lit: Jens Ingvordsen, The Jewellery Box, p. 146 (shown set with amber and green agate).
