Henri Fantin-Latour Lithograph "La Nuit"

Item Description

Number 33 of a limited edition lithograph by the acclaimed French artist and lithographer Ignace Henri Jean Théodore Fantin-Latour (1836-1904), better known simply as Henri Fantin-Latour.

For most of his life Fantin-Latour was known as a still-life and portrait painter, these type of commissions earning him a good living, but during his later years he was able to indulge a passion for creativity of a more imaginative and expressive nature.

He produced a series of drawings, pastels, oils and lithographs inspired by his imagination, including Le Soir (evening), La Nuit (night), Aurore (dawn) and Le Jour (day).

This poetic and sensual image, taken from the original oil on canvas, shows a young nude woman reclining at night in the heavens with a cherub or putto alongside her.  In the words of the French art critic Gustave Geffroy writing in 1897, "No woman ever lay more softly, in a painted heaven, enveloped in waves of soft clouds" .

When we acquired it, the frame was too badly damaged to be restored so we have had the image reframed in the same style and attached the small plaque crediting the artist and titling the picture "Le Soir".

The original wax seal and signed, numbered certificate is attached verso.

The overall size is 55.5 X 65 cm with the image alone measuring 45.5 X 54 cm.
