Rivière Fisherman with Harpoon

Item Description

Rare and extremely impressive Art Deco bronze harpoon fisherman from the French artist and sculptor Maurice Guiraud-Rivière (1881-1947).

This high quality sculpture was made for the house of Etling in Paris, which specialised in the finest Art Deco bronzes commissioned from the premier sculptors of the day. Furthermore, they were known to have only taken the earliest castings in order to ensure that the crispness of detail was at its finest.

The athletic looking fisherman is crouched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the water and is poised to launch his harpoon at precisely the right moment.  The stealth and concentration of a true hunter is etched on his face and in his posture, which has been so well captured by the artist.

Dating from around 1925 and with a pleasing greeny-brown patina, this very fine piece is signed Guiraud Rivière and also marked Etling Paris.

Approximately 54 cm long and 57 cm high to the end of the harpoon.
