Bronze Lady Card Tray

Item Description

Art Nouveau patinated bronze figural visiting card tray by the Belgian artist Georges Van der Straeten (1856-1928), with the title "Au Bain".

Depicting a Nouveau maiden, her body partially covered by a long robe, elegantly stepping from her bath. She wears flowers in her hair and is crossing her hands in front of her so as to hold the robe in place.

The lady's skin is patinated in a subtly different shade to the rest of the piece, giving this delightful sculpture a most attractive look.

Signed Van der Straeten and with the hammered foundry seal of the Societé des Bronzes de Paris.  Also numbered D 4948.

Circa 1900, approximately 39 cm in height and in very good condition.

Interestingly this artist originally trained as a lawyer before turning to sculpture and moving from his native city of Ghent to Paris.  Here he worked from1883 to 1928 and regularly exhibited at the Salon.  He was awarded a silver medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900 and later bacame a Knight of the Légion d'Honneur.
