Great little Arts & Crafts hammered silver box that's full of character.
With a blank cartouche in the centre of the slightly domed lid, and fleur-de-lys decoration on all four sides.
The corners of both the box and its lid are reinforced with a sculpted design feature and the lid is secured by two long, shaped strappy hinges.
A chain with a bayonet fitted to the end is fixed to the front and this secures the lid when closed.
The box is lined with wood, probably cedar, and the underside has a black laquered covering that looks to be leather.
Hallmarked for the year 1903 and showing the somewhat indistinct maker's mark of Wilson & Sharp.
A fraction over 11.5 cm wide, 9 cm deep and approximately 5 cm high to the top of the cartouche.
N.B. See our item no. 12570 for a similar box with the same design but slightly different dimensions, made by Sydney & Co. the year after this one.
