Egyptian Revival Table Lamp

Item Description

Extremely rare bronze table lamp with a strong Egyptian theme, originally sculpted by the French artist Paul-Lucien Bessin.

Dating from around 1905-10, this fascinating lamp depicts a young siren holding up a shaped frame from which the floral inspired lamp holder is suspended.  She is standing on the head of a sphinx and wears a long topless gown and ornate headdress, part of which hangs down her back.

On an integral semi-circular base with further Egyptian flavoured detail and supported on three raised feet.

There is no shade since it was designed so that the original owner could show off the fact that he had acquired this marvellous recent invention, the incandescent light bulb. Many homes at that time were still only lit by candles so this would have been quite a status symbol.

A very clean casting with wonderful detail to every part of the figure. Signed Bessin to one side of the sphinx and with the foundry seal for Louchet of Paris.

This lamp has recently been rewired with three core cable and tested to current safety standards. The overall height is around 48 cm.
