Pendant attr. to Charles Fleetwood Varley

Item Description

Pendant in 9 ct. gold with an upright enamelled landscape scene of poplar trees against an early evening sky, attributed to Charles Fleetwood Varley who made a speciality of enamelling scenes such as this.

With gently rounded contours and a fine toothed edge to the gold setting, framing the convex panel in a beautifully understated manner.

Unmarked, as were many of Varley's smaller pieces, this is typical of the jewellery he made for Liberty's around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

On a 9 ct. gold chain with four matching design details spaced at intervals along the length and fitted with a barrel type fastener.

The pendant, including the bale, is just under 4.5 cm long and the necklace chain measures 43 cm.
