Bronze 'Le Bendeur' by J. De Roncourt

Item Description

This iconic sculpture by Jean de Roncourt, which is arguably his most admired work, is more usually seen in spelter.

However, a much smaller number were cast in bronze and this particular piece is a fine example.

The subject is an athletic male wearing just a loincloth and straining to bend a large metal bar. He is seen leaning back with one leg extended in front of him and the other supporting his weight. His arms are outstretched to each end of the bar as, with all his strength, he pulls the top part towards him whilst holding the lower end firmly on the ground.

Superb quality casting with wonderful detail to the man's face, hair, hands etc.

De Roncourt was and still is regarded as the premier sculptor of the male figure during the Art Deco era.

Set on a black marble base, the overall measurements are 72 cm wide by 18 deep by approximately 55 cm high.

Marked 'bronze' at the back of the man's loincloth and signed De Roncourt in the marble, the condition is very good with a little ageing to the patina and a few of the usual nibbles to the marble.
